Cynics can read what they will into this, but Porsche GB has made its very own ‘preview’ S Sport, seemingly by loading up a gatling gun with all the available performance-orientated options and spraying them at a regular Cayman S. The resulting car even gets the Sport-aping painted wheels and name decal side stripes.

Now, as was clear from the ad itself, there are a handful of key differences between the S and the S Sport. In fact, this is probably it for stringing out the appeal of the current generation car as the new one appears next year. Nonetheless, the fastest and sportiest Cayman to date will get 299bhp instead of 291, suspension lowered by 10mm and, for the first time as standard on a Cayman, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). There’s more grip, bite and helm acuity, but no obvious reduction in the suspension’s wonderful suppleness. More than that, the way the steering marries pure feel with exactly the right amount of kickback is something not even the 911 can better these days. Body motions are brilliantly controlled, traction almost unfathomably good. The chassis is particularly efficient at communicating small but critical dynamic cues, making it easy to get a feel for the point of balance. This Cayman tells you precisely how hard you can go.

And it keeps telling you things – about the road, about how well you’re driving – long after the initial rush of acquaintance has faded. Proof, if it were needed, that performance isn’t everything. That said, the gulf between what’s provided and what the chassis craves is impossible to ignore. Charismatic as the Cayman’s water-cooled 3.4-litre boxer engine is, it lacks the slam of the 911’s larger unit, and the way it leaves you wanting more (quite a lot more, actually) is a chronic condition. It’s unlikely another 8bhp is going to fill the void, but it will help. One thing’s for sure: keep a lid on the options, and £49,890 will undoubtedly be a little easier to swallow than £64K.

The GT3 will be sold in limited quantities & only to specific customers, therefore no cost has been released. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT3 will debut at the New York Auto Show, perhaps with a cost tag attached for the elite to ogle.

It's obvious from the photographs that the SLS AMG GT3 is a race bred monster. The creation team itself have countless years experience within the racing community. Mercedes AMG division have been working with HWA, which over look the French Touring Automobile racing operations, to bring the GT3 to life. The GT3 has been designed to meet or exceed all FIA regulations, so it will be track prepared off the manufacturing line.

The most obvious change to the SLS AMG will be the aerodynamics package, which give the GT3 it's race car looks and obligatory over sized spoiler. Every part has a purpose on a race car and it's no different with the GT3, which is capable of taking advantage of the down force created by such a body kit. Woven throughout the hood, fenders, and body panels are vents and ducts to keep the driver and engines cool under heavy load. Improvements not available in the road going SLS and what will make the GT3 a collectors dream.

Inside the engine bay Mercedes-Benz has utilized the SLS's 6.2 liter V8. The road car's engine has been heavily modified, although engine torque & horsepower specifics have not been released. According to FIA GT3 rules there will be limits that will dictate what type of performance numbers the SLS AMG GT3 can ouput, to stay qualified for FIA racing standards. The rules are called "Balance of Performance", which will help insure an even playing field on the track.

Like the outside of the GT3, the inside has been reworked & stripped down. Expect small creature comforts & more performance driven amenities, a considerable number of which are dictated by the FIA rules for safety. A racing steering wheel, roll cage, fire extinguisher, as well as a plethora of buttons & switches outfit the cockpit. The GT3 also comes with only a drivers chair, so no taking laps around the track together with your friends, unless they are setting on the device box.
